Oxygen Cage Therapy
(O₂ Cages)

What is An Oxygen Cage?

An oxygen cage (also called an oxygen chamber or oxygen kennel) is a specialized enclosure that delivers a higher concentration of oxygen than normal room air to help pets breathe more easily.

Inside the cage, your pet receives:

  • Increased oxygen levels with every breath
  • Controlled airflow, temperature, and humidity
  • A calm, enclosed environment that reduces stress

Unlike masks or tubes, oxygen cages allow pets to rest comfortably while receiving treatment.

Why Oxygen Therapy is Important

Oxygen is essential for every organ in the body. When oxygen levels drop (a condition called hypoxemia), it can quickly become life-threatening.

Oxygen cage therapy:

  • Stabilizes pets in critical condition
  • Supports vital organs during illness or injury
  • Buys time while diagnostics and treatments are performed

Signs Your Pet May Need Oxygen Support

If your pet shows any of the following, they may need immediate oxygen therapy:

  • Rapid or labored breathing
  • Gasping or open-mouth breathing
  • Blue or pale gums/tongue
  • Collapse or extreme weakness
  • Persistent coughing or wheezing

These are medical emergencies and should be treated right away.

Why Use an Oxygen Cage Instead of a Mask?

Oxygen cages are often preferred because they are less stressful for pets. Benefits include:

  • No restraint or face mask required
  • Reduced anxiety (especially for cats or fearful animals)
  • Continuous oxygen delivery while resting
  • Safer, more controlled environment

What to Expect During Treatment

  • Your pet is placed inside a temperature-controlled oxygen cage
  • Oxygen levels are adjusted based on their condition
  • Veterinary staff monitor breathing, comfort, and vital signs
  • Treatment continues until your pet is stable
